In today’s fast moving world the need for more bandwidth is ever increasing due to the internet, smart phones and other applications which are greatly driving up this demand. Network operators are pushing the transmission capacity to their limit with increased data rates, DWDM and new fiber installations, but that may come at a cost if the fiber cable is not characterized.
Significant risks are taken when failing to properly characterize the fiber before network design or system turn-up. When the fiber is not characterized beforehand, there is a strong possibility the new service might not function as expected. Fiber Characterization is a series of complex test that helps determine the quality of the fiber infrastructure and verifies the fiber can effectively carry the intended services without error. The primary tests that are required for ensuring optimum performance consist of loss, ORL, OTDR, chromatic dispersion, and polarization mode dispersion.

The need for more and more bandwidth is increasing year after year and the demand is growing exponentially. In order to meet this need providers are turning to DWDM, ROADMs and increased transmission speeds with 100Gbps being the latest trend. With these changes service providers now have many customers with massive amounts of data flowing across these networks and any downtime can be critical and extremely costly. These new offerings add great complexity in testing and spectral analysis is now essential to make sure all the individual channels are all operating within specification in order to provide superior QoS.
One of the most important parameters in determining the health of a DWDM network is the OSNR. OSNR stands for optical signal to noise ratio and this key performance indicator helps predict the overall BER of the optical network. Different advancements in services as well as increased data rates over the last several years has led to extreme test challenges when it comes to OSNR. These changes have changed the way that OSNR needs to be measured and currently there are different OSNR measurement methods depending on the network's characteristics. Most people are not aware of these new test standards and if the wrong standard is used it can greatly affect the OSNR readings.

It’s critical that the correct OSNR measurement method is used as the test results could show that OSNR passes industry specifications but in reality it may fail and lead to network outages. 100Gbps rates also bring new impairments and test challenges. Gathering test data might be an easy task for some, but analyzing the data and putting it into a comprehensive easy to read report can pose a challenge for most. The most complex report is the Bi-Directional OTDR analysis,and it can be a daunting task, especially for new cable builds with many fibers such as a 288, 432, 864 etc. This type of report can only be generated by a person who is highly skilled and has an in depth knowledge of OTDR analysis and measurements. Ethernet Services have become the prevalent service for high-performance, reliability, and cost-efficient connectivity. Ethernet continues to evolve as the transport technology of choice and has changed greatly over the years due to the demand for new applications and increased bandwidth requirements. With these new changes it is now imperative that reliable tests are conducted in the manner the network is being utilized and ITU Y.1564 is a new service activation test methodology that encompasses these new changes.
ITU Y.1564 is our primary test for verifying Ethernet services due to the fact most providers are offering multiple services, real time applications and will have bursty traffic within their network. This new standard provides a more robust and thorough test of Ethernet networks by allowing you to test simultaneous services with each service carrying Data, Voice or Video.The Y.1564 test starts with a service configuration test which helps verify the configuration of each individual service and gives insight on whether such things as traffic priority, traffic shaping and policies are set correctly. Once the individual configuration test is completed then it moves on to the Service Performance Test. The Service performance test, will run with all services running simultaneously just as real world traffic would flow through a network. Both tests (service configuration & service performance) look at key performance indicators (KPI’s) such as Frame delay variation, Frame Transfer Time, Information rates, and frame loss ratio.
Some customers may still rely on the old RFC-2544 standard and if this is you then don’t worry as we can still perform the RFC 2544 test. However keep in mind the Y.1564 is a much more efficient and stringent test that is designed for today’s networks and alleviates the short comings of the RFC-2544.
