  • Fiber Characterization
  • In today’s fast moving world the need for more bandwidth is ever increasing due to the internet, smart phones and other applications which are greatly driving up this demand. Network operators are pushing the transmission capacity to their limit with increased data rates, DWDM and new fiber installations, but that may come at a cost if the fiber cable is not characterized.

Significant risks are taken when failing to properly characterize the fiber before network design or system turn-up.  When the fiber is not characterized beforehand, there is a strong possibility the new service might not function as expected.  The issues can be as simple as high loss, high ORL or it could be a bit more complex such as the wrong equipment beingcalled out in the design and in some cases, you may find that the fiber itself can’t support the intended services and a new fiber cable will be required.  All these deficiencies will lead to network down time, truck rolls, substantial delay in service provisioning, and missed turn-up commitments.

    What is Fiber Characterization?

Fiber Characterization is a series of complex test that helps determine the quality of the fiber infrastructure and verifies the fiber can effectively carry the intended services without error. The primary tests that are required for ensuring optimum performance consist of loss, ORL, OTDR, chromatic dispersion, and polarization mode dispersion.

Todd Cable has highly qualified field engineers that have many years of experience in testing, analyzing and documenting optical networks for optimal performance. We make sure the fibers will support the services that are going to be deployed across them so you won’t have to worry.

  • Advanced Fiber Troubleshooting
  • Our experienced staff has the capabilities, the tools and the know how to help resolve the complex and intermittent issues that may be plaguing your network.    There are times when customers experience issues and they assume the issue is not related to the fiber infrastructure because the optical power levels appear to be fine at the receiver.   When power levels are fine, most users then start replacing cards or other network elements only to find out this did not resolve the issue and now they do not know where to turn.

Our testing staff is here to help.  Our team has many years of optical and networking experience in regards to troubleshooting.  We have seen and rectified every kind of issue you could imagine. Through the many years of experience we have acquired the knowledge and the capability to help pinpoint these hard to find issues.  Contact us today to learn how we can help with any of your hard to find fiber related issues.

  • DWDM Spectral Analysis
  • The need for more and more bandwidth is increasing year after year and the demand is growing exponentially.  In order to meet this need providers are turning to DWDM, ROADMs and increased transmission speeds with 100Gbps being the latest trend.  With these changes service providers now have many customers with massive amounts of data flowing across these networks and any downtime can be critical and extremely costly.  These new offerings add great complexity in testing and spectral analysis is now essential to make sure all the individual channels are all operating within specification in order to provide superior QoS.

One of the most important parameters in determining the health of a DWDM network is the OSNR. OSNR stands for optical signal to noise ratio and this key performance indicator helps predict the overall BER of the optical network.   Different advancements in services as well as increased data rates over the last several years has led to extreme test challenges when it comes to OSNR.  These changes have changed the way that OSNR needs to be measured and currently there are different OSNR measurement methods depending on the network's characteristics.  Most people are not aware of these new test standards and if the wrong standard is used it can greatly affect the OSNR readings.

    OSNR Measurement Methods

    • OSNR IEC 61280-2-9 for 10G and Below without ROADMs  vehicle
    • In-band OSNR, for 10Gwith ROADM’s or 40G non-coherent
    • Pol-Mux OSNR for coherent  40G/100G

It’s critical that the correct OSNR measurement method is used as the test results could show that OSNR passes industry specifications but in reality it may fail and lead to network outages.   100Gbps rates also bring new impairments and test challenges.   The new impairments of Inter-channel crosstalk and cross phase modulation can now pose potential issues

We have the ability to make sure the OSNR is measured correctly, we can verify inter-channel crosstalk and cross phase modulation won’t impede your 100G service. Our experienced field engineers will easily perform the spectral analysis while making sure all channels are operating within specification.

    We identify:

    • Number of channels
    • Channel Power
    • Channel wavelength
    • Channel Flatness
    • Channel Spacing
    • OSNR ( 10G, Roadms, 100G etc)
    • EDFA Gain
    • Long term monitoring for drift
    • Inter channel cross talk
Contact us today to learn how we can help meet your DWDM testing needs.

  • Data Analysis
  • Gathering test data might be an easy task for some, but analyzing the data and putting it into a comprehensive easy to read report can pose a challenge for most.   The most complex report is the Bi-Directional OTDR analysis, and it can be a daunting task, especially for new cable builds with many fibers such as a 288, 432, 864 etc.   This type of report can only be generated by a person who is highly skilled and has an in depth knowledge of OTDR analysis and measurements.   Our engineers have analyzed millions of traces and have the tools and the knowledge to quickly put your data and into a meaningful easy to read report.

Let us take away your challenge of analyzing and generating reports.  Our offering includes:

    • Uni-Directional OTDR Analysis
    • Uni-Directional Power Loss
    • Chromatic Dispersion Analysis
    • Fiber Characterization Analysis
    • Bidirectional OTDR analysis
    • Bi-Directional Power Loss
    • Polarization Mode Dispersion Analysis

Also, we offer 3rd party assessment on the quality of the test data.  Many times there may be discrepancies on the quality of the test data that was taken.  This discrepancy is usually between the customer and the one who conducts the tests. We verify that the results and that the proper parameters were used for each test.  When proper parameters are not used, we provide recommendations that should be followed for quality results.

Contact us today to learn how we can help meet your needs for putting your data into a comprehensive easy to read report.

  • Ethernet Testing Services
  • Ethernet Services have become the prevalent service for high-performance, reliability, and cost-efficient connectivity. Ethernet continues to evolve as the transport technology of choice and has changed greatly over the years due to the demand for new applications and increased bandwidth requirements. With these new changes it is now imperative that reliable tests are conducted in the manner the network is being utilized and ITU Y.1564 is a new service activation test methodology that encompasses these new changes.

ITU Y.1564 is our primary test for verifying Ethernet services due to the fact most providers are offering multiple services, real time applications and will have bursty traffic within their network.   This new standard provides a more robust and thorough test of Ethernet networks by allowing you to test simultaneous services with each service carrying Data, Voice or Video. The Y.1564 test starts with a service configuration test which helps verify the configuration of each individual service and gives insight on whether such things as traffic priority,  traffic shaping and policies are set correctly.  Once the individual configuration test is completed then it moves on to the Service Performance Test.   The Service performance test, will run with all services running simultaneously just as real world traffic would flow through a network.  Both tests (service configuration & service performance) look at key performance indicators (KPI’s) such as Frame delay variation, Frame Transfer Time, Information rates, and frame loss ratio.

Some customers may still rely on the old RFC-2544 standard and if this is you then don’t worry as we can still perform the RFC 2544 test.  However keep in mind the Y.1564 is a much more efficient and stringent test that is designed for today’s networks and alleviates the short comings of the RFC-2544.

    ITU Y.1564

    • Frame Loss ratio (FLR)
    • Frame Delay Variation (FDV)
    • Frame Transfer Delay (FTD)
    • Committed Information Rate (CIR)
    • Excessive Information rate (EIR)
    • Overshoot
    • Committed Burst Size (CBS)
